Feel the air at an altitude of over 3,280 feet (about 1,000 meters), hike through rugged gorges, listen to wildly romantic waterfalls and enjoy fabulous views again and again. You can experience all this in the Hochschwarzwald – a dream landscape for hikers. The excellent network of paths guide you through the dense forests, across green meadows and the region’s high mountains – you will be enchanted by the wild scenery of the Hochschwarzwald. Along the way, you can learn more about each of the high peaks and their peculiarities, whilst admiring nature’s surprises along the way.

In this Collection, I show you eight different day hikes that will reveal new corners of the Hochschwarzwald: the romantic Mathisle pond near Kirchzarten, the often underestimated Blößling or the adventurous path to the Rappenfelsen. There’s something to suit every type of hiker, regardless of how much time you have. You may have seen the Feldberg many times before – but have you also hiked along the north-eastern slope of the mountain? You always swim at Schluchsee – but have you already enjoyed the view of the highest lake in Germany from the Bildstein? Is the Wutach gorge is too touristy for you? Then start this unique hike along the wild river when the day has just begun and most hikers are still asleep.

The landscape in the Hochschwarzwald is enchanting all year round. Admire the awakening of nature in spring or enjoy the shady hiking trails and airy breeze on hot summer days. In autumn, the orange-red deciduous trees contrast to the dark evergreen fir trees and in the cold months, you can walk through a winter wonderland and enjoy the spectacular view from the mountain tops. On some hikes, however, surefootedness is important and please bear in mind that these tours are better in dry conditions as rain makes the rocks slippery whilst ice and snow also make hiking more difficult. If you want to find out about the condition of the trails in advance, just call the tourist information Hochschwarzwald: 00497652/12060.

You can reach all the starting points of the hike by public transport. The region is well developed for tourism so the public transport runs well. Hinterzarten or Schluchsee are great starting points for your day trips. In both towns, you will find several accommodation options and a good train connection to Freiburg. In many towns in the region, you will find information centers that will help you with all your needs. An overview can be found here: hochschwarzwald.de. Otherwise, put on your hiking boots, open your eyes and leave everyday life behind for a few hours in the valley.

Not Rome, but St. Blaise. The so-called "Black Forest Cathedral" could easily rank among the Italian churches, but it is in an idyllic setting in the tranquil town of St. Blasien. A visit to the cathedral is planned for the 13-kilometer hike.
