A long hike is wonderful. It's equally fantastic to take a refreshing dip in cool water. How about combining both? I've collected a few hikes for you in the Netherlands that end with a cool-down.

Especially on hot summer days, it's nice to jump into the water at the end of the trail. But even in early autumn, diving in is still fun. And of course in spring: particularly shallow bodies of water warm up quickly early in the year. Do you want to set out in the middle of winter? Even then, these routes are beautiful, and you might even be able to swap your swimsuit for a pair of ice skates.

In the water-rich Netherlands, there are many opportunities for swimming. Of course, you can walk in the dunes and then jump into the sea. But there are even more beautiful places where you can go for a dive. That's why I've combined a series of special places where you can swim in natural bodies of water with a beautiful hike each.

End a round through the lakes at Ankeveen in North Holland at a natural beach. In the dunes at Overveen, you'll find 't Wed, a dune lake in a beautiful setting. Or how about a walk around the peninsula of Marken, where you can swim with the famous lighthouse 'Paard van Marken' in the background? These are just a few examples of beautiful places where you can finish your hike with a swim.

All hikes start at a car park that is as close as possible to the swimming spot. This way, you won't have far to go back to the car after swimming. However, you can also get to 't Wed comfortably by train.

Just one more tip: Don't forget your swimsuit and towel!

This route starts and ends at the parking lot of the Ieberenplas. Ideal, because you end your walk at this swimming lake and can get back into the car afterwards. But of course not before you have taken a nice walk first.

From the parking lot you can walk into Boswachterij Grolloo. The area here mainly

Of course swimming in the sea is great. But it might be extra special to take a dip in a dune lake a short distance from the beach. That is the destination of this walk.

Before you reward yourself with a round of swimming, take a nice walk through the dunes of Zuid-Kennemerland National Park. The possibilities

Swimming in the IJsselmeer is possible in many places. But do you want to combine nature, culture and a short walk with a splash in the water? Then you are in the right place in Marken. Or on Marken actually, because Marken is a former island in the Markermeer.

This route is a circle around the Ankeveense plassen. There are several paths right through the wetland area, allowing you to view the pools with the characteristic reed borders from the inside.

Ending a walk with a swim is great, especially on hot days. You can also swim at height - according to Dutch standards - such as on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug.

Crazy about water? Then you have to go to De Biesbosch. This is the largest freshwater tidal area in Europe and consists of a river delta with old pilot whales, willow forests and Dutch polders.

In this walk you can see both the sea and the Veerse Meer inland dike. Yet the influence of the sea is still visible in the lake. The water is brackish: between fresh and salt. I don't recommend taking a huge sip during your swim, but if you taste it carefully you will notice the difference.

Thorn is known as the White Town, because of its striking white-painted houses and monumental buildings. Moreover, it is located in rolling Limburg and close to the banks of the Maas.
