After leaving the gravel track through the woods, there is a 1km (0.6 mi) stretch along a tarmac road before turning back onto a small gravel road through forests, fields and past the occasional house. This gravel continues for the next 15km (9.3 mi) with only intermittent stretches on a proper road

Quite early on in the day is one of the biggest climbs of the whole route

Today starts along a section of the Åtradalsleden bike route, a smooth cycle route that follows a former railway track.

The first 45km (28 mi) or so are almost entirely on roads, though these are small and quiet so there is not a lot of traffic to deal with. Instead, it all feels remote and peaceful

The time has finally come to leave the Kattegattleden as we turn inland and cycle away from the coast and towards Stockholm.

Starting at the fortress, the route heads through Varberg, taking in the central market square (where there is also a great bike shop).
