Winter Kungsleden Ski Tour Day 1 - Abisko to Abiskojaure
A shorter first day to get our ski legs on the Kungsleden. Pulling our 25 kg pulkas, we had to adjust to slower skiing and the challenge of following the trail over melted out bridges. Nature celebrated our first night in the huts with an amazing display of the aurora…

Maxwell Sno Park Exploration...before the snow!
Super fun morning on the trails, with a dusting of snow, just freezing lakes, and gorgeous firs to put me in that winter mood. Bring on the skiing!

Zigzag Mountain Trail
Found some vert in the lush green forests of Mt Hood! This trail is one to revisit in the spring when the rhododendrons are blooming. The endpoint of this hike is the old location of the West Zigzag lookout, which offers sweeping views of the valley below. My GPS was…

Eagle Creek in the rain
Recent heavy rains = waterfalls going crazy! One sketchy creek crossing and wet, wet feet. A great day!

Santiam Wagon Road
Looking for mushrooms and history along the historic Santiam Wagon Road. Found shaggy mane, king bolete, lobsters and a bunch of lovely but inedible 'shrooms too.

Over 38 miles of old road are open for hiking and mountain biking. Old growth trees, gigantic rocks, a lively river, and the echoes of history make this a route worth exploring. I definitely want to go back with my bike and ride this mellow trail!

Boulder Ridge
A quiet trail not too far from Portland. Towering trees, Mt Hood views (on better weather days), a solid climb, and the possibility you might see a bear or a mountain lion keeps this one high on my list.

Our destination today was the peak of Strawberry Mountain, checking out Strawberry Lake, Little Strawberry Lake and Strawberry Falls along the way. We saw another large herd of mountain goats up around 8,000 feet. They appear to wander along the ridge lines all through the mountains. The summit of Strawberry

We drove up to the Strawberry Campground Friday morning, and we were able to grab a campsite in the small area (10 sites) easily, despite it being a holiday weekend. Our destination this first day was Slide Lake, a lovely alpine lake about 5 miles from camp. We were delighted to stumble across a large

We woke to heavy clouds and a misting of rain after listening to the wind rattle our tents all night long. Thankfully we had visited the ridge just north of camp the night before to see the wonderful views of Mt Jefferson and the valley to the east, or we would have had no idea they were out there.

We woke to clouds, a sign of the incoming weather but also a welcome break from the heat of the day prior. Our hike began on the Bowerman Lake trail, which quickly starts a gentle climb up the far side of the valley along the Horse Pasture Creek watershed. A trail crew was out working on this trail

We began our winter Kungsleden journey in Abisko, where we arrived by train from Narvik. Another popular way to get to Abisko is to take the night train from Stockholm. We rented skis, poles and pulkas from the Abiskoturiststation so that we could carry all of our essential gear and food with us. Because
