Starting from Simonswald, the north-east ascent through the Ettersbachtal to the Kandel summit is a wonderful hike with, in sections, quite a demanding route. Many thanks to Peter53 (komoot.de/user/660708901127) for the suggestion!
First a few meters on Ettersbachstraße to run in, then it goes up on a moderately wide forest road on the eastern flank of the valley for almost 150 meters in altitude. Soon you reach a forest path parallel to the slope, which only leads you gently uphill back to the valley floor. There is a large wood storage area here, where you have to be careful, the entrance to the serpentine path is easily overlooked. Now you follow an old, hardly maintained path, which was once elaborately laid out with quarry stone retaining walls and was probably of some importance. After about 200 meters of altitude, the old path ends and continues steeply up the slope on a very narrow and barely noticeable trail.
At about 900m you reach the Schindelbergstraße and now it goes on sometimes wider and sometimes narrow forest paths up to the Kandelhof and to the Kandel summit.
For the descent over the Jägerpfad through the western flank of the Ettersbach valley, you first have to walk down the extended valley end, from the summit it's about 3.5 km. Then it goes on the narrow and easy to walk hunter's path back down into the valley, in between with wonderful views and views down into the valley and the surrounding, astonishingly mighty mountains. Shortly before the end, you can stop again at the Schmiederlihof chapel and enjoy this wonderful tour. Highly recommended!

The Todtnau waterfalls are always worth a detour, but with today's sunshine and the past frosty days, they are a fantastic sight. The waterfall framed by ice cascades, the bridges on the upper fall, some of which are encrusted with icicles - really worth seeing!
