Day#12 Balkan Bikepacking, Sisak - Zagreb (last stage)

Last and final stage of this Bikepacking trip. Cycle route was flat and not very exciting. Passing through some villages with old timber houses, sadly most of them falling apart. After 12 days of cycling it’s good to get home again. First stage is the Flixbus from Zagreb to Graz, and then tomorrow by train from Graz via Vienna and Prague back to Berlin.

Day#11 Balkan Bikepacking, Banya Luka -Sisak

I haven chosen the flatest option to get further north. Today a mix of local but also some busy A-roads. Border crossing into Croatia (EU again!) not a big deal. I cycled through lots of villages in Croatia with derelict buildings but also EU funded infrastructure projects going on. Surely not easy for the people there to make a living as it far from a touristy destination.

Day#10 Balkan Bikepacking, Kupres - Banja Luka

Finally a day with more downhill than uphill. Initial part of the ride still relatively high up with a bare landscape. After the first long descent, it got warmer and the scenery more spectacular - the second part of the ride was cycling through a gorge, even spotting some wild water rafting.

Day#09 Balkan Bikepacking, Mostar - Kupres

Straight after leaving Mostar the first climb of the day. Some further climbs followed but all of them without steeper sections. Overall a lot of uphill ending the ride In Kupres - a winter sport resort.

Day#08 Balkan Bikepacking, Trebinje - Mostar

Set off too late again;( (Breakfast was served too late ;) Nice scenic ride on a mix of local and regional roads - no gravel today. The intermediate hilly sections provided again too many steep parts. When you think you are done, then there is another one and another one to push up. Arrived in Mostar; lovely old inner city but obviously heaving with tourists.

Day#07 Balkan Bikepacking, Kotor - Trebinje

A much more scenic and pleasant tour compared to yesterday’s horrific coastal ride. The first kilometres flat along the shores of the Golf of Kotor, followed by a ferry crossing (free for cyclists;)) and further along the coast before crossing into Croatia. Scenic local roads passing orchards and vineyards before the climb of the day started (steep sections of 10%) but amazing views towards Dubrovnik. The big surprise was the border crossing into Serbia-Herzegovina: the road became narrower, the tarmac was replaced by fine gravel before the ride turned into a full blown MTB ride through the wilderness. No border post but instead a huge pile of rocks and concrete formations. What a recommendation from Kamoot! The next few kilometres still a MTB challenge before finally reaching some tarmac again.
