About Ecce Homer

Love and participate in all types of cycling as well as running, open-water swimming and even combining them all in triathlons. All this is a vain attempt to prevent the middle-aged spread and aid my main sporting love, which is rock climbing. I try to cycle around 200 miles per week and I'm happy to go out with anyone, but not sure if I could keep up with most of you youngsters (or indeed some of you "old-timers")!

Dusted off my Giant Contend (my winter bike) and took it for a spin. A few off-road bits, but nothing of enough significance or roughness to warrant calling it a gravel ride.

A great way to spend my birthday. Many off-road segments at regular intervals... from the very start and almost to very the end. Lots of different challenges... short steep climbs, long off-road drags, technical climbs on rocky terrain, 4 fords to cross and narrow but solid woodland tracks and bridleways... as well a lots of great farm tracks. Hover's Lane was a blast as usual... lots of huge and fairly deeps puddles to rip through... still a big kid at heart!

Not a bad pace considering it was around 75% cross-country and also lots of styles and gates to negotiate.

Went for a wander around the National Arboretum at Westonbirt this afternoon, soaking in the autumnal colours and pondering on the ways of human beings... including myself. I ambled around, mainly off the beaten tracks amongst the trees, sometimes barefoot, feeling the softness and chill of the dewy grass underfoot. I encountered virtually no one except when I occasionally had to cross the main gravel tracks and was struck by what is perhaps an allegory for life. I noticed that most of the people dutifully following the well defined paths were looking at their feet... and I wondered whether they thought I was the weird one? Or perhaps they didn't even notice me or the full splendour that was around them? But then, maybe I'm being too harsh and a bit cynical?

Lots of big hills and a mechanical didn't do much for my average speed. Still, a nice ride with a distinct autumnal vibe to it and few new hills conquered. Dark Lane in Chalford is utterly bonkers... ridiculously steep (around 30% for a big part of it), rough and gravelly. It was also greasy... I had to push around 20 yards of it after spinning out... got going again thanks to someone's driveway having enough of a flat section for me to be able to clip in again... I'll buggered if I'll be going up there again! 😂
