Very beautiful, almost completely preserved city wall around Oberwesel.
The city fortifications are one of the best-preserved buildings of this type in the Rhineland with their sixteen towers (from formerly twenty-one) and the wall that is still almost complete. Its construction may have begun soon after 1213 (1220?). Around 1240 the wall around the city center was raised. The fortification was first mentioned in 1257. At that time, King Richard of Cornwall stated in a document that the city was surrounded by a wall.
According to Schwarz, the wall around the southern suburb was built around 1250, shortly after that around the suburb of Niederburg, and around 1350 the wall around Kirchhausen was built. For Dehio, the two suburbs in the north (Niederburg, with the former Cistercian monastery of Allerheiligen) and in the south (Kirchhausen, with the Liebfrauenstift) were only included in the fortification belt around 1400 and in the middle of the 15th century (1444?).
The city wall was damaged during the Wesel War (1390/91). After the end of hostilities, the damage was repaired and the wall was further strengthened.
