You have a wonderful view from the tower. The steel structure swings a little when climbing, but that is completely normal. Next time we will definitely take binoculars with us.

A great, modern observation tower with a wonderful view and, as a highlight, an adjustable replica of the Napoleonic wink telegraph on the top platform

The Traumschleife Mittelrhein is not signposted (should happen in May 21st), but it can be done well according to the map. One of the most beautiful dream loops that we have run so far.

A viewing tower stood on the 412 m high peak stone from 2003 to 2015, the foundations of which can still be seen today. The summit of the Spitzestein is a larger pile of stones that you can easily climb to enjoy the view of the Hunsrück heights in the Middle Rhine Valley.
There is a larger hiking hut with seating and tables.
Right next to the cairn there is a small telegraph tower from the end of the 18th century.

In 2020 a new, triangular steel tower was built (90 steps).
The steps and platforms are largely opaque, but since they run around a narrow, central half-timbered pylon, you have an unobstructed view at all times, but the tower sways significantly due to visitors or the slightest breeze, so there is a medium risk of dizziness.

Small accumulation of rocks. The information about the wing telegraph is interesting. From the new observation tower you have a very nice view of the landscape.

The lace stone with the eyes of the painter Carl Haag (1852) part 1

The Spitzestein (417 m above sea level) is one of three striking rock formations on the Hunsrück heights on the left bank of the Rhine. It has not been proven whether it had a mythological function in the Celtic period (between 500 and 50 BC). It may have served as a landmark for the Romans, who ruled the region for 500 years since Julius Caesar's first crossing of the Rhine (55 BC), as well as for medieval knights and travelers. Early travel guides from the 19th century mention it: in the second volume of his work “The Picturesque and Romantic Rhineland,” published in 1840, Wilhelm Johann Spitz carefully lists everything that can be seen from the Spitzestein. In the summer of 1852, the painter Carl Haag (1820-1915), who was born in Erlangen and had been living in London for some time, discovered the rock while hiking through the heights of the Rhine. Coming from England, he stayed in the "Golden Plug Puller" for a few days, as he did in 1850. He is just as fascinated by the walls, towers and churches of Oberwesel as by the romantic landscape; they offer him welcome motifs for numerous sketches and watercolors.

The Spitz Stein is part of the Mittelrhein Traumschleifenweg, a path with great views and about 14.5 km in length. It is worthwhile to graduate from the Günterodehaus above Oberwesel.

                                  Construction/Details

Tower skeleton made of 13 largely prefabricated steel components, with viewing level and signal mast according to the Chappe system. Total height 15.75 m for three floors (21.0 m for 4 floors). All basic elements in an identical/repeatable design, components in a heavily galvanized and specially coated surface, all component connections screwed. There is a platform for each flight of stairs to linger and avoid oncoming traffic (even for visitors who are not quite comfortable with heights). The chosen basic shape of an equilateral triangle represents the most ideal/determinable static structure. Balustrade with display boards for visualization, explanation of the technology and instructions for imitation. Mechanics for operating the signal mast, swiveling display cases for focusing on long-distance targets, even beyond the valleys and the Rhine. Information boards about the painter Carl Haag, his work and his work “Im Spitzestein bei Oberwesel”. Due to the required longevity and to reduce maintenance costs, no wooden components are used. The lace stone with the eyes of the painter Carl Haag (1852) part 2

On August 17th and again on August 18th, 1852, the 32-year-old Haag climbed up to the Spitzestein to capture this rock formation in a watercolor painted on site. He carried his stool, the small easel, the large sketchbook and the box with brushes, paints and water up there along with the day's provisions; as a traveling painter he is used to this. He found a place south of the rocks and a little below them from which the formation presents itself to him in impressive beauty. The result is the watercolor “Im Spitzestein near Oberwesel”. For his customers in England he adds the title “A Study of Rocks. The Spitzestein, near Oberwesel, on the Rhine”. Haag gave the watercolor to the London ophthalmologist Dr. Sell William Bowman. In the winter of 1867/68 it was exhibited at the Royal Water-Colour Society in London, of which Carl Haag was a member. It is now housed in the National Museums and Galleries of Northern Ireland in Ulster. Haag travels from Oberwesel to Tyrol. Here, by a lucky coincidence, he met Duke Ernst II. of Saxe-Coburg & Gotha, Queen Victoria's brother-in-law. In the following years, Haag painted numerous pictures on behalf of the Queen. He becomes a British citizen and acquires high respect. His travels take him to Italy, Dalmatia, Greece, Egypt, Palestine and Syria. In 1864, Haag had the Red Tower in Oberwesel converted into a residence with a studio and spent almost every late summer there with his large family. Haag and his wife Ida moved to Oberwesel in 1903. He died in his tower in the war year of 1915, very old. His ashes lie at its foot. Since 2015, the International Carl Haag Society has been researching the adventurous life and extensive work of the painter, to whom it is dedicating this memorial plaque on his 200th birthday.

                                      Design approach/conception

Construction of a new observation tower on the foundations of the previous one, for the purpose of conveying the landscape, the history and the topographically special place. The tower should once again set an example and itself be a long-distance sign in the landscape. It is intended to guide interaction and encourage non-verbal, non-linguistic interpersonal communication. It can provide an easy, original way to cross geographical and political boundaries! It is intended to offer a sensual form of communication in the digital age and start on the day of the inauguration with a dialogue between district administrators Bröhr and Puchtler (e.g. the topic of the Rhine bridge or, more simply, about the weather). Perspective 2029 - Through appropriate “partners” / networking of similar ones Constructions, an interactive network can be created in the Upper Middle Rhine Valley World Heritage Site as part of BUGA 2029. The municipality of St. Goar - Oberwesel can be the initiator and midwife here. Source: Text information board - Hubertus Jäckel dipl.-ing. architect bda bwd

In the 19th century, according to the Hansenblatt newspaper (the publication of a guild founded in the Middle Ages), there was a signal and destination recorder on the top of the stone, a telegraph facility of the time. According to contemporary witnesses, there was later a tower for the fire station. Today there is a lookout tower that towers above the trees and from which you can enjoy a wonderful panoramic view.
