The original name of the church is Budai Nagyboldogasszony-templo, it got its popular name from the fact that both weddings of King Matthias were held here.
The XIII. century, after the Tatar invasion, the church was originally built in Gothic style on the French model, later it was rebuilt by King Louis the Great, and then the main tower of the church was built during the reign of King Matthias.
During the Turkish era, it was converted into a mosque, several parts of it were demolished, and after the liberation of Buda, it was given to the Jesuits, who completely transformed the church into the Baroque style. The large rose window is walled up, the Gothic tower helmet is demolished, and a baroque onion roof is replaced.
The facade of the church completely loses its original features. In the 1700s, a fire and then a lightning strike destroy the church. Looking at the pictures taken in the 1800s, we see a completely different picture of a church compared to today's conditions.
In 1867, after the compromise, Ferenc József and his wife Queen Elizabeth were crowned here. In 1873, the king orders that the baroque nature of the church be abolished and the original conditions be restored.
Between 1874-96, a large-scale reconstruction took place under the leadership of Frigyes Schulek, which created the building's present image. Schulek restores the original, separate character of the church at the cost of demolishing the adjacent parts of the building. In several places, the walls of the building are demolished to the ground in order to reconstruct the original architectural solutions. Everywhere he strives to restore the old conditions, but in such a way that the damaged parts are completely renewed.
Schulek essentially reimagined the building, the northern row of chapels and the upper part of the great tower follow his ideas entirely. The decorative painting of the interior of the church, the wall frescoes and the colored glass windows were also done at that time.
During the Second World War, during the siege of Buda, the building suffered serious damage, it was a miracle that it was not demolished after the war, since then they have been working on the building almost continuously. By the end of 2013, we managed to restore the old glory of our main church in Budavar.
