The decision to build this "Monument to the Heroes of Hungary" was made in 1896, on the 1000th anniversary of the Hungarian conquest. Construction work began three years later and was not completed until 30 years later, in 1929.

Heroes' Square and the monuments to great personalities on it were designed and built by the architect Albert Schickedanz and the sculptor György Zala.

The square features the Millennium Monument (Millenniumi emlékmű), the Heroes' Monument and the Colonnade, a semicircular structure made of columns. The Millennium Monument is the central element of the square. Its 40-meter-high column is visible from far away and bears the image of the Archangel Gabriel at the very top.

At the end of the 19th century there was a drinking fountain where the huge Heroes' Square is today. It was only in 1895 that the Hungarian Government decided to build a millennium monument on this site.

According to tradition, the archangel appeared to the Hungarian king Szent István with the Hungarian crown in one hand and a double cross in the other, and ordered him to convert the Hungarians to Christianity (which is what actually happened).
The so-called Heroes' Monument was also inaugurated in 1929. It is located at the foot of the column and bears the inscription "In memory of the heroes who sacrificed their lives for the freedom of our people and the independence of Hungary".
The colonnades, a semicircle open in the middle, are home to the images of Hungarian kings and important personalities of the country.
