Mehringplatz has its origins in Friedrich I's idea of upgrading his residential city. For this he had a suburb, the Friedrichstadt, created outside the old city center. His successor, the Soldier King, expanded it considerably, had a customs wall with 14 gates built and three representative squares laid out directly behind one of the gates (the Hallesches Tor). That was the birth of Pariser Platz, Leipziger Platz and Mehringplatz.
The Mehringplatz has almost sunk into insignificance today, although it has remained a representative square even after many conversions.

Mehringplatz (formerly: Belle-Alliance-Platz) is a square that was created when the city was expanded in 1734 at the beginning of Friedrichstrasse in the Berlin district of Kreuzberg. After it was completely destroyed in World War II, it was rebuilt in a modified form. In the middle of the round square is the Peace Column by Christian Gottlieb Cantian. It is considered a social hotspot and will be redesigned by 2020
