One of the highlights on the Hermannsweg through the Teutoburg Forest is definitely the imposing Externsteine. They are among the most important natural and cultural monuments in the entire Teutoburg Forest. But myths and legends also haunt the Externsteine. If you are not afraid of heights, you can also climb the five rocks and enjoy a wide panoramic view.

A very nice and well signposted hiking area. There are about 240 meters of altitude to overcome, but even for inexperienced is the create. Solid footwear is a must. The Externsteine speak for themselves and should necessarily be climbed because of the great view. At the Silberbach mill there is a nice restaurant with beer garden on the lake. On the way back you can fill up your water supplies at the source. The water tastes very delicious and is crystal clear.

The landmark, next to the Hermann Monument, in the Teutoburg Forest: Wikipedia writes about the individual rock formations:

Cave Rock:
The most important traces at the Grottenfels (number 1a) are the caves, the staircase, the summit plateau and the famous rock relief of the descent from the cross. The summit has been leveled plateau-like, so that an equally high area extends over the top of the grotto rock, which is torn by fissures. About two meters below the summit on the southwest side of the base of an angularly mounted around the summit space can be seen. The rock has been carrying a stairway since 1663, probably longer. The staircase starts between the tower rock and the Grottenfels, leading first to the summit of Fels 1b and from there to the summit of Grottenfelsen (number 1a). Traces of older stairs are available.

Dome-Grotto:
The grotto itself consists of three rooms located along the northeast side and interconnected. On the southeastern narrow side of the rock is the entrance to the so-called dome grotto. Next to the entrance stands a figure, vaguely carved out of the rock, with a key that is often understood as Peter. The approximately 4 meter long dome grotto is narrow at the bottom and widens up to a dome. Its irregular shape, which bears chisel marks only in a few places, they should have received by fire.
Main cave:
A narrow corridor leads to the rectangular main grotto extending to the northwest. She has, as all walls testify, received her box shape with the help of a hammer and a chisel. Its most striking feature is a hemispherical basin about 1.25 meters in diameter, which is sunk into the ground at the southwest wall. Two door openings, one narrow and rectangular, the other wide and arched, give light to the room. Next to the rectangular door there is a medieval inscription and a grin.

Besides cave:
The third box-shaped room, the grotto, adjoins the main grotto at the northwestern end and extends at right angles to the main grotto in the northeastern direction. Their walls are also worked. The southeast side of the room contains two rectangular depressions, one of them man-high, the other a square at heart level.

If possible visit first Externsteine / squatting woman in Teuto and then the Saxon and Czech Switzerland;). Long pants recommended if the environment wants to be explored.

The Externsteine! you need a ticket to climb the rocks. The single ticket costs 3.5 for adults. But you can also buy a combination ticket for the rocks and the Hermannsdenkmal. The ticket for both attractions costs € 4.50.

A visit to the Externsteine is very worthwhile. Unfortunately, you can not go up to the bridge in winter! The next to the tower can be climbed throughout the year. But be careful, here it is in snow and frost, hellishly smooth!
Our walk was exhausting, ever because of the weather at -5 ° C, but so much the better. The 250 km drive was fully worth it.

Currently, admission to the stairs up to the two rocks costs €4 (adults). For that, you get the view from a height of around 40 m and the path across the beautifully curved bridge. Thanks to the admission, the area around here is well maintained and the flow of visitors is kept somewhat in check. Choosing the weather and time carefully helps to avoid being overwhelmed by the crowds.

Unfortunately, climbing the rocks on routes other than the stairs has been prohibited for some time (but would probably only tempt car and bus tourists to avoid the entrance fee in an unsafe way).

If you want to save on the entrance fee, you can climb up the free viewing rock on the south side via the hiking trail.
