The European Court of Human Rights
The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) was established in Strasbourg in 1959 by the member states of the Council of Europe to ensure compliance with the European Convention on Human Rights. This was signed in 1950. The ECHR judges complaints from individuals, groups of people and states that relate to violations of the rights recognized in the European Convention on Human Rights. Since 1998, the ECtHR has been a constantly meeting court. Citizens can address complaints directly to it after domestic legal remedies have been exhausted.
The judgments made by the Court are binding on the states concerned and have led governments to change their laws and administrative practices in many areas. The Court's jurisprudence makes the Convention a living instrument for meeting new challenges and consolidating the rule of law and democracy in Europe.
The current Court building in Strasbourg was designed in 1994 by the British architect Lord Richard Rogers. From here, the ECHR monitors respect for the human rights of 800 million people living in the 47 member states of the Council of Europe.

The European Court of Human Rights is a court established on the basis of the European Convention on Human Rights that reviews acts of legislation, jurisprudence and administration relating to violations of the Convention in all signatory states.
