Little Venice in Strasbourg Old Strasbourg comes to life in the lanes of the Gerber quarter Petite France. The former neighborhood of fishermen, millers and tanners resembles an island of peace in the midst of the city. In the literally translated, "small France", half-timbered houses of the 16th and 17th centuries are crowded with spacious courtyards and high pitched roofs, which span the open attics where the tanned skins used to be hung to dry. Through the district, the River Ill and 3 small canals. With the excursion boats you drive through the district and some locks. Directly on the banks of the Ill lies the Maison des Tanneurs (gerber house), probably the most striking building in the district.
