    Completed in 1998, the European Parliament in Strasbourg has since hosted the monthly sessions of European Union parliamentarians. Its hemicycle, which can accommodate 750 people, is in a glass and sandstone tower 60 meters high.

    An arch with a huge glass facade of 13,000 square meters comes to marry it. Its shape runs along the Ill and the Marne-Rhine canal, two waterways that open up the landscape and enhance the magnificent architectural ensemble.

                        Since the Parliament's founding in 1952, its powers in EU law-making have been significantly expanded several times, most notably through the Maastricht Treaty in 1992 and most recently through the Lisbon Treaty in 2007, which came into force on December 1, 2009. Parliament's rights were also gradually expanded with regard to the formation of the executive branch, i.e. the election of the European Commission. Candidates for the EU Commission must first undergo a hearing in the European Parliament and demonstrate their suitability and qualifications for the proposed office. This hearing is usually carried out by the relevant committee of the European Parliament and all hearings are also made public via web stream on the European Parliament website. Only after successfully passing the hearing can the candidate be elected as a member of the EU Commission; this is also done by the European Parliament (plenary).

                          The typical contrast between government and opposition factions is missing in the European Parliament. Unlike in most national parliaments, where the government factions are usually loyal to the government and support its draft laws in principle, in the European Parliament, majorities change depending on the voting topic. This also means that individual MEPs are more independent and, with their negotiating skills and expertise, have greater influence on EU legislation than members of national parliaments can.
