The Nienstedten church cemetery is one of the oldest cemeteries in the Hamburg area. It was opened in the spring of 1814 without a formal inauguration.

The Nienstedten cemetery covers an area of around 10.5 hectares with around 4,500 graves - from a 1-digit urn row grave to a 60-digit earth grave.
This cemetery is characterized by a unique population of old trees in the older parts of the cemetery, as well as the obligatory hedge boundaries. Another feature of this cemetery is the many old and new rhododendrons.

Many culturally and artistically valuable tombstones were restored from gravesites in the Nienstedten cemetery whose right of use had expired and reinstalled in newly furnished museum areas. The cemetery administration created seven museum areas in collaboration with the Hamburg Monument Protection Office from 1970 to 1996.

The cemetery also has a large number of graves of well-known families and personalities. Many of these graves have been declared historic, such as the graves of the Fürst von Bülow family and the Sieveking family.

In 1911, today's waiting room was built, a building with four columns in the entrance area. Small funeral ceremonies were also held there if the ceremony was not planned for the church. There are also toilets here. The waiting room was renovated in 2014.

The cemetery chapel is located directly at the main entrance on Rupertistrasse. It was built in 1927. The chapel is characterized by a circular, stepped central building with a tent roof. Funeral services for the deceased take place here. In the 1980s a figure of Christ was placed in front of the chapel. It is a copy cast from bronze. The original is in front of the Frauenkirche in Copenhagen.
The chapel was extensively renovated and renovated in 1995 and 2009.

One of the oldest cemeteries in the Hamburg area has enough history and stories to offer visitors. In addition to many famous families and individuals who have been buried here since 1814, numerous gravestones worth preserving have also accumulated.
The geometrically designed cemetery offers visitors numerous paths with interesting graves, old trees and tall shrubs. Picturesque green scenes result from the combination of old stones and climbing plants.
In several museum areas, which can be found throughout the cemetery, information boards explain the special features. The gravestone art of the 19th and 20th centuries, special use of materials - and last but not least, the families buried here.
You can find the Nienstedten cemetery
at Rupertistraße 37, or on Elbchaussee near the church, 22609 Hamburg
