We came here as part of the Via Baltica. The ascent to Blankenese was a welcome change. Due to the many stairs you have a real ascent - even if you don't expect something like that in Hamburg :-). From the top you have a great view of the Elbe and you can reward yourself with a coffee in one of the many cafes.

The Staircase District in the Blankenese district is a Hamburg attraction with a unique Mediterranean flair. It stretches along the Elbe bank between the approximately 72-meter-high Süllberg and Baurs Park and is bordered by the Strandweg (beach path) that runs directly along the Elbe. The majority of the houses can only be reached on foot via various staircases with around 5,000 steps.
The Elbe suburb of Blankenese, with its winding alleys, small villas on the Elbe bank, and houses with allotment gardens, is a postcard-perfect sight.
The buildings are often painted white, exuding an occasionally Mediterranean flair.
This tranquil gem in the west of Hamburg is a contrast to the hustle and bustle of the Hanseatic city. There is also one striking difference:
The Süllberg and neighboring mountains are the hilliest terrain for miles around.
For example, between the streets Am Kiekeberg and Strandweg is Blankenese's Staircase District, with approximately 5,000 steps. The Strandtreppe alone has 170 steps.

Tours focusing on the Staircase District lead past Wilhelminian-era houses, the church on the market square, through parks, and up and down stairs.

Blankenese, the village on the river – steep stairs, narrow alleys, a Danish Positano with allotment gardens and pretty houses in a very expensive location, crowned by the Süllberg with its castle complex, a gourmet restaurant and beer garden. Blankenese – a tourist attraction, a shining white mountain of cuteness with stubborn, proud native inhabitants.

The former fishing village, first mentioned in documents in 1301, owes its name to its "blanke Neeße," a shining promontory that jutted out into the Elbe like a nose before a storm surge swept it away. Politically, Blankenese was also torn between. For more than two centuries, it belonged to Denmark, then to Austria for two years before Prussia expelled the Austrians and made the village part of Schleswig-Holstein. In 1919, the neighboring village of Dockenhuden was incorporated into the city. Eight years later, the larger Blankenese fell to Altona under protest and became a district of Hamburg in 1937. But Hamburg is far away.

From the Waseberg (87 m above sea level) via the Süllberg Terrace, you can walk crisscrossing Blankenese's staircase district. The highest point on the Süllberg Terrace is 72 m above sea level. From up here, you have a magnificent view of the Elbe River with its ships and the Airbus site in Finkenwerder.

The Elbe suburb of Blankenese has many small streets. If you want to see villas and large estates, this is the place for you. You also learn that Hamburg is very hilly. The Süllberg and neighboring mountains are the hilliest terrain in Hamburg and always offer great views of the Elbe.
The Blankeneser stairs district is also located here, with a total of almost 5,000 steps. The only question is: How do you get your purchases delivered to your front door, how sporty does the postman have to be and how do you get here by car or bicycle?????

Worth seeing is the stairs quarter, which used to be the village center of the old Blankenese. This district lies on the steep slope of the Elbe; winding stairs and narrow alleys lead with many variants from the street at Goßlers Park above Am Kiekeberg down to the street Strandweg below on the Elbe, where the ship pier, the so-called Bull'n, can also be found.
Among the stairs are the Charitas-Bischoff stairs, the reading man stairs and the long beach stairs with 170 steps.
The accompanying, mostly close-knit building stock is characterized by small-scale houses, some of which have thatched roofs.
