Equestrian monument to King John of Saxony

The "King John Monument", an almost six-meter-high equestrian statue on a 7.50-meter-high three-tiered base made of green syenite, is located on the Theaterplatz between the Semper Opera House and the Semper Gallery in Dresden. The bronze monument was created between 1882 and 1889 by Johannes Schilling with depictions from art, science, industry, warfare, agriculture, trade and transport.
John of Saxony
Born on December 12, 1801 in Dresden
Died on October 29, 1873 in Pillnitz
After the death of his eldest brother, John became King of Saxony in 1854. During his reign, he suffered defeat against Prussia in 1866. Saxony was then forced to join the North German Confederation. However, in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71, the Saxon army contributed significantly to Prussia's victory. Johann was considered liberal in his social and educational policies. He was extremely educated. Posterity also knows him as the translator of Dante's "The Divine Comedy", which he published under the pseudonym "Philalethes", the friend of truth.
