On the Kutschenberg there is a group of trees directly on the former inner-German border. Hence the name: West-Eastern Gate. It is formed by two 12-meter-high oak trunks that are connected to a stainless steel threshold on the floor.
They are framed by 66 red oaks. Over time, these should overgrow the oak trunks to symbolize the growing together of West and East.
The West-Eastern Gate was handed over to its destination in June 2002 by former Soviet head of state M. Gorbachev.

The West-East Gate was inaugurated on June 19, 2002. In connection with the inauguration, the BUND and other partners came up with the idea of creating a “European green belt”. This biotope network covers 12,500 km and stretches from Norway to Greece/Turkey through the whole of Europe.
