First of all: Carl Christian Horvath was not the founder of Potsdam, but his services to the city are undisputed 🙂.

The bookseller and publisher Carl Christian Horvath (1752–1837) was the first head of the Potsdam city council in 1809/10. After an apprenticeship as a bookseller in Wittenberg and a first job in Berlin, he moved to Potsdam in 1778 with the bookseller Pauli, whose publishing house he took over a few years later. Horvath was given the privilege of running a book, art and music store. He opened his first shop in the Knobelsdorffhaus, and from 1791 he can be traced to Wilhelmplatz, today's Platz der Einheit.

Horvath founded the booksellers' exchange in Leipzig, the forerunner of the German Booksellers' Association. After he was given responsibility for the administration of the war contribution fund in 1807, the trust of the citizens of Potsdam was again confirmed in him by his election as city council chairman. Horvath's grave is in the Old Cemetery in Potsdam. Source: brandenburg.museum-digital.de/object/82899
