The three-aisled pillared basilica is located in the idyllic Marlygarten, directly on the Green Grid. Built in 1845 at the request of Frederick William IV and completed in 1854, it contains, among other things, the Royal Crypt, which houses the remains of King Frederick William IV and his wife Elisabeth. At the entrance to the Sanssouci Park in Potsdam, in quiet seclusion, lies the Church of Peace, modeled after an Italian monastery and grouped around a delicate bell tower. Frederick William IV had it built as a court and parish church between 1845 and 1848, and he and his wife are buried there. An artificial pond was created solely for the church.

The Church of Peace was built between 1844 and 1848 in the east of the Sanssouci Park, on the edge of the Peace Pond created by Peter Joseph Lenné. The model was the Basilica of San Clemente in Rome, but before its Baroque remodeling. Ludwig Persius drew up the designs on behalf of Friedrich Wilhelm IV. Ferdinand von Arnim and Ludwig Ferdinand Hesse were responsible for construction management. Persius designed a three-aisled church building with apses on the east side. The central nave is covered by a flat gable roof, the side aisles have flat pent roofs. The almost 42-meter-high bell tower, built between 1848 and 1850, was modeled on the Campanile of Santa Maria in Cosmedin. On the west side, a colonnade encloses the inner courtyard, the atrium, created in 1846/47. Adjacent to it to the north is the Emperor Frederick Mausoleum, built between 1888 and 1890 and designed by Julius Carl Raschdorff. For this burial chapel, Raschdorff adopted the architectural form of the rotunda in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. The colonnade leading from the narthex to the north to the Christ Gate, with 18 Corinthian sandstone columns and an exedra extending into the Peace Pond, is, like the gate, by Hesse. Adjacent to the atrium to the south is the cloister, designed by Friedrich August Stüler and Hesse and built between 1852 and 1854, with 53 Corinthian terracotta columns from the Potsdam pottery factory Wilhelm Koch (1815–1889).
