Bassinplatz in Potsdam is located north of the Old Town and is the largest of Potsdam's three baroque city squares. Unlike Potsdam's Old Town, Bassinplatz suffered little damage during World War II. During its more than 250-year history, it has undergone several changes in its appearance. In 1979, the square was protected as a monument under the East German Monument Protection Act. In 1992, the area around Bassinplatz, with its focus on the Dutch Quarter, was declared the first redevelopment area in Potsdam by statute (Bohle-Heintzenberg, 2002).

Bassinplatz, framed by the reddish facades of the Dutch houses and dominated by the Church of St. Peter and Paul, has been undergoing renovation since 1994 and is home to a lively weekly market.

The Baroque square, built between 1737 and 1739 on damp ground, featured a quatrefoil-shaped basin and an island with a summer house in the center. Green spaces bordered by linden trees were planted in the corners. After numerous renovations, the basin was filled in in 1825, leaving only a remaining pond, and the square was redesigned by P. J. Lenné. 100 linden trees were planted in 1829. After the construction of the Catholic church between 1867 and 1870, the remaining pond was filled in between 1871 and 1876, and the square was leveled and green spaces created between 1877 and 1883.

In 1935, Hans Kölle, together with Karl Foerster, realized a simple redesign, which included, among other things, a raised bed of 3,000 red roses. After 1945, the Gloriette was demolished, and the Soviet War Cemetery was built in its place. In 1972, the bus station, which has since been removed, was added to the southwest corner. In the northeastern section of Bassinplatz, there are columnar oak trees, designated as natural monuments no. 31 and 32.
