On the evening of April 15, 2019, there was a major fire in the cathedral, which could be brought under control in the early morning of the following day. Large parts of the roof truss made of oak burned, the wooden Viertsturm collapsed and the vault of the main ships was broken in at least two places. Numerous art treasures and relics, however, could be saved. [4]
French President Emmanuel Macron announced the same evening a reconstruction of the partially destroyed building. The reconstruction should take place within five years. [6]
