The Bocholt-Herentals Canal (also known as Kempisch Canal or Maas-Schelde Canal) was first part of the Kempische Vaart (1846). In the 1930s, the western part merged into the Albert Canal or was filled in. The eastern part remained, was widened and deepened (1926-8) and received its current name. However, it lost its role as the only waterway between the industry around Liège and the port of Antwerp. From then on, a lot of traffic was taken over by the shorter and modern Albert Canal.

The canal connects to the Albert Canal and the Zuid-Willemsvaart. In addition, it is connected to three other Kempen canals:

the Dessel-Kwaadmechelen canal in Dessel

The Bocholt-Herentals canal is given more of a recreational role due to the increasing number of pleasure boats on inland waterways in Belgium and the Netherlands. Among other things. Herentals, Geel, Ten Aard, Lommel Colony and Neerpelt received pleasure ports for water tourism. The new marina on the "Molse Meren" can also be reached via the Dessel-Kwaadmechelen canal. The canal is used by local canoe and kayak clubs at various locations. The tow path along the canal forms the backbone of the cycle network through the Kempen.
