The Bocholt-Herentals Canal was the first part of the Kempische Vaart (1846). In the 1930s the western part merged with the Albert Canal or was muted. The eastern part was preserved, expanded and deepened (1926-8) and given its current name. However, it then lost its role as the only waterway between the industry around Liège and the port of Antwerp. Much of the traffic has now been taken over by the shorter and modern Albert Canal.

The Maas-Schelde Canal, also Kanaal Bocholt-Herentals or Kempener Kanal connects the Albert Canal at Herentals with the Zuid-Willemsvaart at the Belgian Bocholt. In 1846 it was opened after three years of construction. Source: Wikipedia
