The Allies landed at Uncle Beach in 1944 during the Battle of the Western Scheldt in the Second World War. Vlissingen has a strategic location on the Western Scheldt and there was heavy fighting here in the area around the Oranjemolen, which was codenamed 'Uncle Beach'. Now this is an area full of memories and monuments to this battle.

By chance, in 1990, a passer-by came across a stone in the dyke that leads to Fort Rammekens. It turned out that this belonged to a unique German bunker. This bunker was part of the Vlissingen land front from World War II. The bunker was excavated, cleaned and made accessible with a staircase. The special thing about this bunker is that the structure hardly protrudes above its natural surroundings. This makes it difficult to see from the air.
