On March 22, 2016, 74 years later, a monument was unveiled by the relatives of forty Jewish residents of Vlissingen who were deported on March 24, 1942. According to Jewish custom, the deceased were symbolically buried in consecrated ground by shoveling sand from Israel into a container in front of the monument. Then the names of the victims were read and Chief Rabbi Binyomin Jacobs said the kaddish, the prayer for the deceased and a minute of silence was observed.

This monument brings people back in name to Vlissingen, where they all just wanted to grow old, according to the initiator of the monument, Jacques de Hond. The statue consists of two columns with barbed wire on top. It is one column, broken in two parts. I want everyone to understand how those people's lives are torn apart. All those names that come to you… it must be very clear what happened and what horrors these people have undergone.
