The temple mansion was destroyed in World War II and only the tower remained. Today the meadow in front of the building is a popular meeting place for students. Today you will find "the Green Laboratory" here as an external location for BUGA 2021. There have been plans for a reconstruction of the temple for many years.

In the middle of the enchanting Weimar Park are the ruins of the Templar House, which was bombed in 1944 and used as a summer salon in Goethe's time.
At the end of the 18th century it was converted from a former greenhouse into a drawing room. A short time later, the eponymous figures of the Templars found their place there. Used for decades as a place for various cultural events, the Tempelherrenhaus saw Franz Liszt as a concert artist, among others. It later served as a studio for Johannes Itten.
Partially destroyed by bombs on February 9, 1945, it was so severely damaged by another hit in March of that year that most of it was later demolished.

"The Tempelherrenhaus was a venue in Weimar that emerged from an orangery in the 18th century. After bombs during the air raids on Weimar on February 9 and March 31, 1945, it is now just a ruin."
(Wikipedia) ... Very beautiful romantic ruin on the edge of the park.

The ruins of the Templar House built in 1786 are located in the Park on the Ilm on the western bank of the river, between the Roman House, the Park Caves and the Residential Palace. The neo-Gothic temple was created from a former greenhouse and from then on served the Weimar court as a meeting place for events, exhibitions and concerts.
A year after its construction, the court sculptor Martin Gottlieb Klauer created four life-size statues of the Templars out of wood. These were placed on the corner battlements of the temple and later gave the building its name.
In 1818 the statues were replaced by sandstone figures and the wooden Templar statues found their new place in the corners of the salon.

In 1816, based on Goethe's idea, a tower was built on the east side of the temple. In the same style as the windows, the tower received a pointed arched entrance gate. Now the magnificent house was complete and was used as a concert hall. Many musicians, including Franz Liszt, gave their skills to the ears of the Weimar court. Liszt sometimes played all night long in this building, since his house was only a few meters from the Templar House.

For several years, the Tempelherrenhaus served as the concert hall and studio of the Bauhaus until it was destroyed in March 1945 by a bomb attack during the Second World War. Only the tower of the temple, built in 1816, remained and was restored in 1998. Some of the sandstone figures can still be seen today on remains of the temple house.
The manor house is often confused with the artificial ruin.
As part of the "New Nature" theme year and as one of the six external locations of the BUGA 2021, the Tempelherrenhaus in the Park an der Ilm is presenting itself with a newly constructed outbuilding: the Green Laboratory.

This ruin looks artificial, but was destroyed in the war.

Very nice ruin, not even an artificial one like the neighboring castle ruin.

We were in Weimar for a long weekend and walked every day through the park from the hotel in the city. We really liked the park. There are a few beech trees that are over 200 years old and various old, thick sycamore maples. Many more tree species and even more shrubs. Birds and small mammals feel at home here. Plus the rushing of the Ilm. Really nice.

In addition to a picturesque artificial ruin, the park also has a real ruin, the Templar House.

The ruins of the Templar House had to be bypassed a little during my hike because renovation work was being carried out there.

The Tempelherrenhaus (Templar House) was a former greenhouse in the park on the Ilm that served various purposes.
In 1786/87, as part of the design of the large landscape park on the Ilm, the former orangery in the Welschen Garden was converted by Johann Friedrich Rudolf Steiner into a tea salon, which was available to the ducal family for social events. The tea salon was named after the four life-size knight figures carved from linden wood by the sculptor Martin Gottlieb Klauer, the so-called "Templars," which were placed at the four corners of the salon. The remaining interior furnishings were designed by Georg Melchior Kraus and Adam Friedrich Oeser.
In keeping with the spirit of the times, Karl Friedrich Christian Steiner remodeled it in the Neo-Gothic style in 1811/20. In 1816, a tower was built, presumably designed by Johann Wolfgang Goethe.
As early as 1821/23, the Tempelherrenhaus was converted into the ducal family's summer residence.
In 1829, Johann Wolfgang Kaufmann created stone copies of the Knights Templar. In the following century, the building was used as a concert venue by Franz Liszt and Ferruccio Brusoni, among others; the latter also held master classes there in the early 20th century. The building was also used by the State Bauhaus as a painter's studio.
In 1945, it was largely destroyed in a bombing raid; today, only the ruins remain.
