After a steep push to the summit, your effort is rewarded with spectacular views over to the Glyderau, Tryfan, Carnedd Llewellyn and Anglesey to the north. At 3,425 feet (1,044 m) high, it's the third highest summit in Wales. However, it is far less visited than the giant of Snowdon, meaning you can experience the wild mountain landscape in more solitude.

Reputedly named after a medieval Welsh prince, Carnedd Daffyd forms part of the great Carneddau ridge: the largest area above 3000ft anywhere in Britain south of the Highlands. Its shadowed, fearsome north face is an immense cliff – but most walkers approach via Pen yr Ole Wen, a steep route with grandstand views of Tryfan.

We were lucky to have a sky blue day on a 20km hike over the Carneddau range. Superb all round views can be had here of not only the Carneddau range but of the one and only Tryfan, the Glyders and over the Mendai straight into Anglesey. It is a hard slog to get here but well worth it.
