    Foel Grach, which translates rather unkindly to 'Scabby Hill', is a 3,195-foot (976 m) summit in the Carneddau. Its bouldered top is the least prominent of the Snowdonian mountains over 3,000 feet (914 m) and it is far less visited than the more famous peaks to the south.



    However, Foel Grach has its own remote charm, underlined by the need for a refuge shelter to the north of the summit. The Carneddau can be a punishing place in poor conditions; many hikers have undoubtedly sought shelter here.

      Foel Grach is a mountain in the Carneddau range. It is the eighth-highest summit in Snowdonia as well as Wales, and is included in the Welsh 3000s. It is located on a broad ridge extending northwards from Carnedd Llewelyn to Carnedd Gwenllian (formerly Garnedd Uchaf) and Foel-fras. An emergency refuge has been built below the summit*. Compared to the surrounding mountains, much deeper snow settles here due to its rather broad summit and high grassy slopes. On clear days the Isle of Man and even the Mourne Mountains in Northern Ireland can be seen from the summit. It is a UK listed Nuttall.

      *This shelter is made of stone and has a wooden door. It has some small bench seats but otherwise it is bare.
