The Ōtani Mausoleum (Ōtani Hondō), also known as Ōtani Sobyo or Ōtani Hombyo, is the sacred final resting place and mausoleum of Shinran Shonin, the revered founder of the Jōdo Shinshū (True Pure Land) school of Japanese Buddhism. Located in Kyoto's Higashiyama district near Kiyomizu-dera Temple, it is a site of immense spiritual importance, serving as a pilgrimage destination for countless Jōdo Shinshū followers who come daily to pay respects to Shinran and their ancestors.
The complex, which is one of the two main burial sites for Shinran's remains in Kyoto, offers a serene and contemplative atmosphere with its solemn architecture and well-kept grounds, often contrasting with the bustle of nearby tourist spots. The mausoleum holds frequent Buddhist services and lectures on Shinran's teachings, including the unique "flower-letter proselytizing" service where flower offerings are arranged to convey Buddhist messages. The site also features a large cemetery and an impressive entrance with a stone bridge decorated with lotus blossoms, a symbol of Jōdo Shinshū.
