The Nishiki Market (錦市場, Nishiki Ichiba) is a narrow, five block long shopping street lined with more than a hundred shops and restaurants. Known as "Kyoto's Kitchen", this lively retail market specializes in all things food related, such as fresh seafood, products, knives and cookware. Here you will find seasonal foods and Kyoto specialties, such as Japanese sweets, pickles, dried seafood and sushi.

The Nishiki market has a pleasant but busy atmosphere that invites all those who want to discover the variety of culinary delights for which Kyoto is famous. The shops that can be found on the market range from small narrow stalls to larger two-story shops. Most specialize in a certain type of food, and almost everything that sells on the market.

Interesting, pleasant, tasty, worth a visit. But make sure you go before 4pm, by that time most fresh food shops close and a lot of the bustling atmosphere vanishes.
