Already 500 years ago people discovered the healing properties of the local springs. However, the spa town was only founded at the end of the 18th century by the Austrian Emperor Franz I and named after him. During its heyday, many famous people lived in the city, including Johann Strauss, Prince Metternich, Franz Kafka and the world-famous composer Ludwig van Beethoven.

Incidentally, the world's first mud bath was founded in Františkovy Lázně.
