The church, under the patronage of Saint Botolph, was built around 1450 and was elevated to an episcopal church in 1554 after the Reformation, which began later in Aalborg than in the rest of Denmark.
In place of today's church there was previously a wooden church and two Romanesque churches. The nave was initially built in the Gothic style around 1450. The tower was only added in 1778-1780 and has a Dutch Renaissance style dome. The church tower is depicted in the city's coat of arms. In 1817 four clock faces were added to the tower, on the south side as a sundial. Three bells hang in the tower. Significant renovations took place in the years 1860, 1886 and 1898/90. In 1899 a sacristy was added to the north aisle. In 1942/43 the choir was extended by 14 meters and a chapel was added to the north aisle. Today the cathedral is 56 meters long and 22 meters wide. St. Budolfi's Church in Aalborg is the cathedral of the Diocese of Aalborg, part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Denmark. The church, dedicated to St. Botolph, was built around 1450 and elevated to a bishop's church in 1554 after the Reformation, which began later in Aalborg than in the rest of Denmark.

A wooden church and two Romanesque churches previously stood on the site of the present church. The nave was first built in the Gothic style around 1450, and the tower was added between 1778 and 1780. It has a Gothic dome and features on the city's coat of arms.

In 1817, four clocks were added to the tower, and a sundial was added to the south side.

Three bells hang in the tower. Major renovations took place in 1860, 1886,
and 1898–1890. The sacristy was added to the north aisle in 1899.

In 1942/43, the choir was extended by 14 meters, and another chapel was added to the north aisle. Today, the church is 56 meters long and 22 meters wide.

Around 1500, the vault was decorated with lime paintings. Its status as a cathedral church is reflected in the ornate furnishings: The altarpiece is Baroque,
created in 1689 by Lauridtz Jensen, and depicts Golgotha in dark tones within a gold frame. The predella of the altar contains a painting of the Last Supper, and the upper part, a painting of Jesus's burial.

The pulpit dates from 1692, also by Lauridtz Jensen. Like the altar, it is in the Baroque style and depicts the Passion of Jesus on ten panels.

The baptismal font, made of white marble, was donated in 1728. A box was created for the royal family on the north side in 1766. The current organ stands on the west gallery and was built in 1959 by Marcussen & Søn of Aabenraa with 40 stops distributed across three manuals and a pedal. The organ façade from 1749 has been preserved.
Since the Rückpositiv was not added until the new organ was built, it was designed by Leopold Teschl. However, because the style did not match the rest of the church, the façade was adapted in 2007. There are also several epitaphs. The most important are the Renaissance epitaph for Karine Hansdatter from 1583 and the neoclassical epitaph
for Jacob and Elizabeth Himmering from 1773/74.
