A town hall was probably built in the first half of the 14th century, nothing is known about a previous building. The town hall was mentioned for the first time in 1347. In 1420 the Treaty of Perleberg was concluded here, it ended territorial disputes between the Hanseatic cities of Hamburg and Lübeck. In the second half of the 15th century, the court arbor was added on the west side. In the 16th century the interior was rebuilt, and in the 18th century a half-timbered extension was added to the eastern gable side. From 1829 it was planned to build a new town hall, the market square should be enlarged and the state of construction of the town hall improved. A complete new building was not carried out in 1834 for cost reasons, in 1835 the new building plan was nevertheless drawn up, although the court arbor was to be retained. Construction began in 1837, the building was completed in 1839, and the interior work was also completed in 1840. There were further changes in 1889, the court arbor was converted into a municipal savings bank, and further renovations took place in the 20th century.
