The Galloway is often described as a very old and original breed. It is said to be descended from a horned and black cattle that lived in Scotland since Celtic times. Its name is said to be due to the word Gallovid or Gaul, which means Gaulish and refers to the presence of this people in the far south of the Scottish Lowlands. In this region, later called the County of Galloway, the herds were known for their long, dark and wavy hair. They were also very resistant to the harsh climate of this coastal area.
