Construction began in 1376 and lasted until 1421. The building inspired the builders of the town halls in Brussels, Ghent, Leuven and Oudenaarde and had a major influence on the city's Gothic bourgeois architectural style.
A monumental staircase leads to the Gothic Hall on the first floor, where murals from the early 20th century depict the history of Bruges. The vault with original polychromed consoles from the 14th century also catches the eye. In the adjoining historic room, even more of Bruges' administrative history comes to life through original documents and paintings.
On the ground floor you come face to face with life-size portraits of former rulers: mayors, kings, emperors and even Napoleon. You'll also get an insight into the development of the castle and the square in front of the town hall, once the civic and religious administrative center of the city.

      Stadhuis (City Hall)
Bruges' City Hall (1376-1420) is one of the oldest in the Low Countries. It is from here that the city has been governed for more than 600 years. An absolute masterpiece is the Gothic Hall with its late 19th-century murals and polychrome vault. In the historic chamber next door, original documents and artefacts are used to evoke the history of the city's administration through the centuries. On the ground floor, the structural development of the Burg square and the City Hall is illustrated.
The Bruges town hall was built in 1376, which makes it one of the oldest town halls in the Low Countries. The city has been ruled from here for over 600 years. The Gothic hall is a work of art in itself, with its splendid 19th-century murals and a colourful vaulted ceiling. The painted figures depict Bruges’ glorious past. The theme ‘citizens and government’ sheds light on the eternal power struggle between the city government, the sovereigns, and the people of Bruges.

The Bruges City Hall is one of the oldest city halls in the Netherlands and is located on the Burg in Bruges. It was built in 1376 and finished around 1400. From here the city has been governed ever since. After a fire in Bruges' belfry in 1280, the old Ghyselhuus on the Burg, the then disused count's prison, became the new meeting place for the city aldermen. In 1376 the ghyselhuus was demolished by order of Count Lodewijk van Male to make way for a real scepenhuus, which was built under the direction of master mason Jan Roegiers and was not fully completed until 1421. The Bruges town hall is the first monumental late Gothic town hall in Flanders and Brabant, a witness to the economic and political flourishing of the city during the 14th century.

The ensemble alone is fascinating. If you have the time, you should visit the town hall and the Freiamt (left of the town hall). Both have impressive boardrooms that underline the self-image of the councilors and judges at that time. Admission is payable for the visit, but the visit is included with the museum card (valid for three days).
To the right of the town hall is the Holy Spirit Basilica, whose simple Romanesque substructure is just as fascinating as the magnificent church on the first floor. Admission is free here, only a small amount has to be paid to visit the treasury.

In the town hall there is a lot to see about Bruges and the people of Bruges. There is also some news:
Using an Augmented Reality (AR) model and various objects, paintings, prints and photos, a new permanent display in the Town Hall illustrates the history of Bruges' connection with the sea. 'Bruges and the Sea' tells the story of the perseverance and inventiveness of the people of Bruges to maintain their connection with the sea. From Roman times to today.

In the cellars of the Crowne Plaza hotel on the Burg you can discover the remains of the Saint Donaas Church. You can visit it freely, but ask for permission at the reception of the Crowne Plaza hotel. If an event were to take place in the basement, this zone would of course not be freely accessible.

The Saint Donaas Church on the Burg was the main church of Bruges. Jan van Eyck's painting "Madonna with Canon Joris Van Der Paele" hung as an epitaph above the canon's grave. In 1799 the building was publicly sold and demolished by the French. With this symbolic act they wanted to break the link between church and state after the French Revolution. In the VR experience of the Historium you get a beautiful picture of this church that has disappeared from our streets.

Bruges City Hall is one of the oldest city halls in the Netherlands
Bruges has been governed from one of the oldest city halls in the Netherlands for over 600 years. The monumental facade of this building immediately reveals its importance. The first stone was laid in 1376, but the construction itself lasted until 1421. The building inspired master builders of the city halls in Brussels, Ghent, Leuven and Oudenaarde and had a great influence on the Gothic civil architecture in the city.

Via a monumental staircase you reach the Gothic hall on the first floor, where spectacular murals from the early 20th century depict the history of Bruges. Look up and discover a magnificent, colorful vault.
In the historical hall next door you discover the history of Bruges and the sea. This subject was not chosen by chance. Bruges owes its prosperity and wealth to its connection with the North Sea. Although the relationship with the sea was sometimes quite turbulent. For centuries the city had to fight. To protect themselves from the water, or to keep the connection with the sea open. Thanks to an Augmented Reality model and various archaeological and art objects, history comes to life. The model with AR projection is based on years of archaeological research by Ghent University and was created in collaboration with Westtoer and Timescope.

On the ground floor, you come face to face with life-size portraits of former rulers: mayors, kings, emperors and even Napoleon. You also get a view of the evolution of the Burg, the square in front of the town hall, once the civil and religious administrative centre of the city.
Today, the political heart of the city still beats here. The Bruges city council still meets monthly in the Gothic hall. In this impressive setting, hundreds of couples in love also promise each other eternal fidelity.

The Market Square is the heart of Bruges, but Burg Square is its soul. It has been the center of power in the city for centuries, and Bruges' municipal government is still based in the 14th-century Gothic Town Hall. This grand, majestic square is surrounded by monumental buildings that define the cityscape. These were built over the centuries and reflect the architectural style of each period.
