The historic old town is not only on foot, but also good to experience by bike.

Canals, bridges and historic buildings provide an interesting ensemble. If you do not need the mainstream hustle and bustle, there are plenty of opportunities to stay in a sunny spot and enjoy the impressions.

Bruges is definitely worth a recommendation.

Being at Bruges, just try to follow the canal (Damse Vaart) to the north to Damme, after a pit stop in the small but very nice old city, carry on up north to the Netherlands by following the canal up to the end in Sluis. Enjoy your meal up there, a lot of opportunities, before returning to Bruges. Once in a lifetime, you should visit those three famous cities of the Middle Ages.

In the period between 1807 and 1810, the square was called Place Napoléon, after this was defeated, the square was given the name Grote Markt. In 1936, during the occupation of Belgium by German troops, it was simply called Markt. After 1945 it was given back the name Grote Markt, which was common in other Flemish cities. Wikipedia.de
