St. Mary's Church survived the Second World War largely undamaged and is the main place of worship for the Bishop of Berlin-Brandenburg.
The construction of the church as a parish church in Berlin's medieval New Town probably began around 1270. The first reliable mention can be found in a letter of indulgence from 1294. St. Marien was built as a hall church in the North German-Marken brick Gothic style.

Around 1470 the wall painting of the dance of death, one of the most famous and oldest monuments in Berlin, was created. It is one of the last remaining representatives of the 'monumental' death dances of the Middle Ages north of the Alps, which gives it a meaning that extends far beyond Berlin.
