The Berlin Wall Memorial is the central memorial to the division of Germany, located in the center of the capital. At the historic site on Bernauer Strasse, it stretches 1.4 km across the former border strip. On the memorial site is the last piece of the Berlin Wall, which has been preserved in its depth and gives an impression of the construction of the border installations at the end of the 1980s.

The Berlin Wall Memorial commemorates the division of Berlin by the Wall and the victims of the Berlin Wall. The national monument, a 70-meter-long original section of the border fortifications, was rebuilt in 1998 by the Federal Republic of Germany and the State of Berlin on Bernauer Strasse (parts of the wall come from other sections) and later expanded. Today the memorial includes an outdoor exhibition, the Chapel of Reconciliation, the Berlin Wall Documentation Center, the Window of Remembrance as well as the visitor center and an exhibition in the neighboring S-Bahn station Nordbahnhof over a length of 1.4 kilometers on the former border strip.

Impressive to see, even if you didn't see them every day (I lived in the Rostock district...). But we heard on NDR radio from time to time when there was an escape attempt...
Now, during visits to the documentation center and exhibitions and in (my) "advanced age", the perversity of the regime has been brought home to me once again!! Always talking about how superior the East and socialism were and then locking up and murdering people who didn't conform to these statements. That was really disgusting!!
Fortunately, there were these brave people who worked in the opposition, took to the streets in 1989 and exposed themselves to the risk of being sanctioned for it - physically and psychologically...
