The gilded eagle represents an imperial eagle. There is actually a copy on the market fountain with its two bronze bowls. The original is in the Goslar Museum. A popular photo motif.

The market fountain in Goslar is something special: it dates from the Romanesque period, the lower bronze bowl is even considered the largest bronze cast of the 12th century. The upper, smaller bowl dates from the 1st half of the 13th century. Both bowls are connected by a fountain column crowned by a (gold-plated) imperial eagle. The fountain is considered to be the largest and oldest Romanesque market fountain in Germany (Wikipedia)

The great importance of the market fountain is obvious: it marks the center of the market square and thus of the city, and is crowned by Goslar's landmark, the eagle. What appears to the viewer at first glance as a unified work of art is in reality a complicated puzzle: the lower fountain bowl (12th century) is the largest bronze cast of the Romanesque period. The upper bowl is about 100 years younger, and with its base it was originally a fountain in its own right. And even the eagle itself: while the body dates from the early 13th century, the most recent addition is its crown, in its current form probably only from the 18th century.
