    Paradeplatz (Zurich)
The Paradeplatz was known in the 17th century as a trading point for animals (including pigs) under the name "Säumärt" (pig market). In 1819 the name was changed to Neumarkt, probably due in part to the ongoing economic boom in the Zurich region. The name Neumarkt lasted for around 50 years until the square was renamed Paradeplatz. This created a connection to the city's nearby armory and ammunition depot.
Until the city walls were demolished, what would later become Paradeplatz was characterized on the one hand by the city walls with the Wollishofer Gate and the Katzenturm and on the other hand by the so-called Tiefenhoflinde. In front of the city wall ran the old city moat, which was still open and was called Fröschengraben. In 1838 the Austrian Johannes Baur opened the city's first and at the time most exclusive guest hotel at the eastern end of the square as the "Hôtel Baur en Ville".
At the same time, the Zurich Cantonal Post Office opened a large stagecoach center next door, the "Zentralhof," which contemporaries said was unique in Europe. It was built according to plans by Hans Conrad Stadler. The Neumarkt at the time became one of the busiest squares in Zurich.
The square was further enhanced by the construction of Bahnhofstrasse from 1864 onwards, as there was now a direct connection to Zurich's main station and the Fröschengraben was filled in. This was much to the delight of the confectioner David Sprüngli, who in 1859 had moved his business premises from Marktgasse to Paradeplatz and into one of the recently built Tiefenhöfe commercial buildings under the false assumption that the new station planned at the time (renovated in 1867) would be built directly on Paradeplatz. No one foresaw that Bahnhofstrasse would become Zurich's grand shopping street. The Tiefenhöfe building complex, built in 1857 by Gustav Albert Wegmann (1812–1858), in which Confiserie Sprüngli has had its headquarters ever since, was the first step towards today's trading and business center.

Legend has it that the gold reserves of Switzerland and other countries are stored under the Paradeplatz - but this doesn't seem to be entirely confirmed.

Be sure to stop by Sprüngli for a hot chocolate and a few Luxemburgerli.

Paradeplatz is a square on Bahnhofstrasse in the City district in Zurich. It is located in one of the most expensive locations in the city and has been synonymous with banks and Swiss prosperity for years. The two major Swiss banks UBS and Credit Suisse are located directly on Paradeplatz. There are also a number of other banks in the vicinity.
