The Church of St. Peter, together with the Grossmünster and the Fraumünster, shapes the skyline of Zurich's old town. What few people know when they stand in front of the Church of St. Peter, they see the largest church clock in Europe. The dial has a diameter of 8.64 meters.
Zurich upgraded 200 years later. The St. Peter received the largest tower clock in Europe, a dial with a diameter of 8.64 meters on each side of the tower. The time on the clock at St. Peter became the official city time. All clocks had to be based on St. Peter until the 20th century. Today, the watch has lost importance in this regard. Only at Sechseläuten is it leading the way. When it strikes 6 p.m. in the evening at St. Peter, the "Böögg" is lit and burned on Sechseläutenplatz on Bellevue.

St. Peter in Zurich is one of the three old town churches that characterize the silhouette of Zurich.
Today's baroque nave, consecrated in 1706, was the first church to be built in Zurich as a Reformed church, but by no means the first church on this site: archaeological evidence shows a 10 × 7 m church building from the 8th or 9th century. A document from 857 mentions the curtis sancti Petri, a court belonging to the church.
This small church was replaced by an early Romanesque church around 1000. A late Romanesque building followed around 1230, from which the choir and tower have been preserved. Rudolf Brun, the first mayor of Zurich, was buried in this choir in 1360. A copy of the tombstone is on the north side. The nave was rebuilt around 1450 in the Gothic style.
During the Reformation, St. Peter's Church was of great importance as Zurich's parish church. From 1522 Leo Jud, a close friend of Ulrich Zwingli, was pastor of St. Peter for twenty years and was known for his excellent sermons. He preached freely and without notes, so that none have survived. Jud was succeeded by Rudolf Gwalter, Zwingli's son-in-law and Heinrich Bullinger's successor as Antistes von Zürich, who remained in office for 33 years. In 1555 the expelled Evangelical Locarnos were assigned to this church, and the Italian Bernardino Ochino became its pastor until 1563. In that year he was banished by the Zurich Council for heretical views.

The Zurich Church of St. Peter is equipped with the largest church clock face in Europe. The church tower served as a fire station until 1911.
St. Peter's Church is Zurich's oldest parish church. Foundation walls from the 9th century are still visible under the chancel.

The first mayor, Rudolf Brun, acquired the church in 1345 with all its obligations and rights. Today his grave and memorial are on the outer wall of the tower. The first Reformed pastor Leo Jud (1523-1542) was a friend of Zwingli and worked on the first Zurich Bible translation. 1778-1801 the pastor J.C. Lavater in this church. His tombstone is also on the church wall.

The dial has a diameter of 8.7 meters. In the tower there are five bells from 1880 - the largest weighs over 6,000 kg without the clapper.
Church music concerts take place regularly in St. Peter's.
