The castle consisted of a bailey and a main castle. But it has disintegrated so much that I could not imagine what it looked like.

Here you enter the Breitenstein ruins from below (on a beautiful hiking trail) - and first come across a time table and then the beautiful archway. The further route of the "Drei-Burgen-Weg" runs a short stretch from here very steeply (and pretty much washed out by rainwater) up onto a wide path, which then remains wide as far as the parking lot.

This highlight is located in the upper area of the Breitenstein ruins on the Drei-Burgen-Weg. There is a small plateau here, from which you have a view of the lower tower of the castle ruins (restricted by the dense forest of leaves) - and can also rest (on the remains of a wall or a tree stump).

Today I climbed the core castle of the Breitenstein via the not very reliable looking wooden staircase. The stairs are only on 2 of 3 legs and the bottom rung is no longer loadable. I advise against climbing because of the increased risk. There is not much to see anyway (see pictures) and the view from above the trench is equally good.

There's not much left. Unfortunately there are no more benches in the upper castle. View only minimal. A lot overgrown. At the lower castle there is no longer a ladder to the top, which is a pity.

A very interesting castle ruin. Many walls are still there. However, you can't really get up to the castle ruins anymore because the stairs have broken down.
The rock castle was probably built around 1246 during the unrest surrounding the deposition of Emperor Frederick II by Pope Innocent IV. It was only mentioned in a document for the first time in 1257 in connection with a knight of Kropsberg, castellan of Breitenstein and servant of the Counts of Leiningen. The knight called himself Burkhard von Breitenstein in 1265.
