The Ritterstein No. 90 indicates the Pulpit Rock 108 steps away. On it are inscriptions commemorating the division of the fifth Haingeraide. The Haingeraiden were cooperative groves, which extended over a large part of the Vosges and the Haardtgebietes. For the 100 year celebration an inscription was carved. It reads: To commemorate the 100th anniversary celebration Aug. 8, 1923. The four rival communities.

The Pulpit Rock is located in the middle of the eastern mountainside of Kanzelkopf, west of Totenkopfstraße. Note on the Pulpit Rock 108 steps away with the inscriptions of the division of a community forest in 1823 of the villages Maikammer, St. Martin, Diedesfeld and Kirrweiler. A very interesting rock formation.

You can approach the Kanzelfelsen from two directions via a small path: one path comes from the south (indicated by Ritterstein No. 90) and one path comes from the northeast (indicated by Ritterstein 91).

“There is an inscription on the rock. It deals with the division of the Fifth Haingeraide (Leonhardt 1928, p. 122). This forest cooperative was a merger of the local communities of Diedesfeld (today part of NW), Kirrweiler, Maikammer and Sankt Martin. The Haingeraide cooperatives date back to the early Middle Ages. The use of wood in the Haingeraiden was an important backbone of the basic supply of the residents of the respective communities.
In the course of the years 1821 to 1826, the Fifth Haingeraide (also Fourth Mittelhaingeraide) was divided. The main reasons for this are the poor condition of the forest, the deficiencies in the administration of the cooperative system and the envy and resentment of the Geraide comrades. Of course, the fundamentally new direction of the forest administration by the Bavarian government also played a role.”

Translation of the inscription (west side): “This forest between the villages of Maikammer, Diedesfeld, Kirrweiler and St. Martin, in undivided ownership since time immemorial, was shared for the benefit and maximum benefit of these villages by the mayors Daniel Reinig, Jacob Gies, Caspar Becker and Georg Seeber as well as the secretary Johann Hartmann and the forest ranger Jacob Albert. In the year of our Lord 1823, August 8th.”
Translation of the inscription below (for the 100th anniversary of the above-mentioned event): “IN MEMORY OF THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF AUG 8, 1923 THE FOUR COMPETING MUNICIPALITIES”.

The anniversary celebration “200 years of division of the V. Haingeraide” took place on August 27, 2023 around the Pulpit Rock.

Please note: There is also a LARGE pulpit rock near the Helmbachweiher: see Ritterstein No. 103!
