According to legend, Spangenberg Castle was once connected to Erfenstein Castle (on the opposite side of the valley) by a leather bridge. de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sage_von_der_Ledernen_Br%C3%BCcke

During our visit (1/2018) the castle tavern was closed and no access to the castle possible. It is open again from 18.3.2018. You too: burg-spangenberg.de

The castle was probably built in the 11th century. From 1505 onwards, the masters of the nearby "Stutgarten" (now a listed building) lived here.
In 1971, a citizens' initiative to save the Spanenberg ruins was founded, from which the "Spangenberg Castle Association" emerged. Its members are incredibly diligent in preserving these ruins (all volunteers!) and very graciously manage the restaurant in the castle tavern, which opened in 1980. Fantastic!

A magnificent, partially well-restored castle with a fantastic view over the village of Erfenstein and the Erfenstein Castle ruins opposite. Spangenberg Castle is easily accessible on foot after a short climb of about 10 minutes and 80 meters of elevation gain.

Normally open Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. (Unfortunately not today due to the coronavirus pandemic.)
Years ago, I had the opportunity to participate in the fantastic knight's banquet.

Unfortunately, the restaurant is closed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

I've been here several times in recent years and have been rewarded with beautiful views and regional Palatinate specialties and wines.

The restaurant staff are members of the Burg Spangenberg Association burg-spangenberg.de and spend their free time here to raise money for the castle's preservation.

Erfenstein castle ruin lies above the idyllic Elmstein valley opposite the Spangenberg ruins. The legend that both castles were connected by a rope bridge is spectacular.

Erfenstein Three Castles Trail
As the name suggests, this tour takes you to the three castle ruins of Erfenstein, Breitenstein, and Spangenberg Castle in the Elmstein Valley. It includes a few climbs, as the castles were built on rocks, but you'll be rewarded with beautiful views.
