Located on Szent István tér (St. Stephen's Square) in the Pest district, St. Stephen's Basilica (Hungarian: Szent István-bazilika) has been the largest church in the Hungarian capital, Budapest, since its consecration in 1905, and the concathedral of the Roman -Catholic Archdiocese of Esztergom-Budapest.

Inside there is space for up to 8500 people. The church near the Chain Bridge is dedicated to the first Christian Hungarian king, Stephen. Originally it was built by Pest Germans as the parish church of St. Leopold, under the patronage of Saint Leopold of Austria, the sub-district is still called Leopoldstadt today. In the entrance area there is a sculpture of St. Gellért with his pupil St. Emeric, son of King Stephen the Saint.

The Cathedral of St. István, inaugurated in 1905, is of beautiful architecture and, at almost 100 meters, it is also the largest church in Budapest. A tower climb is worthwhile because of the great view.

The Stephansbasilika is really very impressive and definitely worth seeing. The mummified hand of the saint is found in a glass shrine in the chapel in the side wing. You can take the stairs or the elevator to the viewing platform. The upper part is definitely worth the effort as the staircase is built around the inner dome. The church can be visited until 5.45 p.m., the viewing platform and the treasury can be visited until 7 p.m. Climbing the platform is beautiful in the dark. The All In One ticket costs 4,500 forints (approx. €13), as of January 2023.

Many magnificent churches can be admired in Budapest. Stephen's Church is one of them. The evangelicals are a bit more modest. But high up on the castle hill.

At the metro, be sure to pull the ticket in advance, it will be 98% checked at the entrance & exit.

It is very important to remember that although Hungarian wine and palinka are acceptable, they are indecently expensive, even in a below average store. My recommendation is to buy the same products, but from Romanian, Bulgarian or Moldovan producers.
