The Matthias Church is a Roman Catholic church in the Hungarian capital Budapest. It is located in the Vár castle district on the Buda side. The Matthias Church - officially the Church of Our Lady (Nagyboldogasszony-templom) - was the first church on the Schlossberg. It is registered as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The coronation ceremonies of Charles I Robert of Anjou (1309), Franz Joseph I (1867) and Charles IV (1916) took place here. It is therefore also known as the “Coronation Church”.
According to the tradition of the Diocese of Esztergom, King Stephen I (1000–1038) built a church here in 1015. Sources from the 17th century also confirm this and it is believed that the remains of Saint Gellért, who was martyred on the nearby Gellért Hill, were buried here. However, there are no traces of any settlement on the castle hill before the 13th century.

Most of the viewing points are high-priced, that's one of the "tourist traps" around. Watch out.

Tourist destination in Budapest. Good vantage point on the Pest side with the parliament. Tip: visit in winter for atmospheric pictures and few tourists.

Despite everything, the Fisherman's Bastion is well worth seeing despite the tourist flow. The view of the Parliament, down the Danube and the overview of Budapest is unique here. The ambience is very impressive and you get a little insight into what has been created here. A big piece of history and with the St. Matthias Church you also get an impression of the pride of Hungary and its prehistory.
Very impressive and interesting, definitely worth a visit in Budapest!

The Fisherman's Bastion (Hungarian Halászbástya) is a neo-Romanesque monument built by Frigyes Schulek from 1895 to 1902 in the Hungarian capital Budapest. It rises on the castle hill on the site of the medieval Buda fish market. The name comes from a fishing guild for which the monument was built. In the Middle Ages, this guild had to defend this section of the city wall. The bizarre structure, whose conical towers are intended to be reminiscent of the tents of the Magyars, is used as a viewing terrace over the Danube and Pest.

In front of the bastion stands a bronze equestrian statue of King Stephen I the Saint, who spread Christianity in Hungary. In 1906 it was designed and made by the sculptor Alajos Stróbl. The pedestal of the statue was built in the neo-Romanesque style according to plans by Frigyes Schulek. It is decorated with decorative elements depicting the life of the king.
Also in the immediate vicinity is the predominantly neo-Gothic Matthias Church.

The idea of erecting the statue was first raised in 1863 by the royal governor, Count Móric Pállfy. A collection was started, but the movement was interrupted. In 1896, the state entrusted the Prime Minister with erecting the statue at state expense. The architect was Frigyes Schulek. The pedestal is 540 cm high, the main bronze figure sitting on a horse is 400 cm. Saint Stephen sits on a richly decorated horse with the crown on his head, a mantle on his shoulders, and a double cross in his right hand.
The plinth is surrounded by an oval plan, pierced parapet, interrupted by pillars. There are reliefs on the four sides of the substructure: coronation, legislation, church building. Homage to Vienna - outstanding moments of Stephen's reign, on the pedestal: the Lamb of God, from the left John and Mark, from the right: the evangelist relief of Matthew and Luke. Inscription: 'STEPHANUS REX/ 977-1038' On the relief depicting the construction of the church, the architect Frigyes Schulek is depicted, and the second figure from right to left - behind the digging friend - is Alajos Stróbl. Mór Jókai, Gyula Benczúr and Alajos Stróbl's mother can be recognized on the relief. Dr. Karl Luger, the mayor of Vienna, was depicted bowing to the ground in front of King István on the 'Obeisance of Vienna' relief.

The Fisherman's Bastion is one of Budapest's best-known monuments, located in the Buda Castle, in the 1st district of Budapest. It is one of the most important tourist attractions due to the unique panorama of Budapest that can be seen from the neo-Roman observation terraces. The main facade of the Fisherman's Bastion, parallel to the Danube, is about 140 meters long, of which the length of the southern corridor wing is about 40 meters, the northern one 65 meters, while the decorative middle parapet wall is 35 meters long. Its stone towers with peaked caps symbolize the seven conquering leaders of Hungary.
It was built between 1895 and 1902 in neo-Romanesque style based on the plans of Frigyes Schulek, who was also commissioned to rebuild the Mátyás Church on the site of the old Buda castle walls. Its name refers to the fact that in the Middle Ages this part of the castle wall was protected by the fishermen's guild. In 1947-48, Frigyes Schulek's son, János Schulek, led the restoration of the building complex damaged in the Second World War. Since 1987, it has been part of Budapest's world heritage sites, as part of the Buda Castle District.
