History of Veneto

The settlement of man in the Veneto is considered to be quite early, but until the pre-Roman era it played a rather modest role in territorial organisation. The latter began to take on a certain weight only with the Romans, who arrived in the 2nd century BC. and they provided for colonization according to the usual centuriatio system; this consisted of dividing the fertile land into many square-shaped plots, called centuries because they were made up of 100 parcels of two iùgers (1 iùgero = approximately 2400 m2), entrusted as property to the settlers' families.

The Romans intensified the cultivations, created and strengthened the urban network (Verona, Vicenza and Padua) and strengthened the communication routes: an intervention, the latter, also required by the strategic importance of this space stretching towards the east.
